Anna Meldgaard Petersen

Attorney

About Anna

Throughout my career, I have worked in or for clients in energy- and utility sector, particularly with renewable energy projects. In connection with such projects, I have dealt with a range of different legal disciplines, including regulatory matters, corporate law, M&A, and especially contract law.

In contract law, I have extensive experience in both Danish and international contracts, where I have worked with large complex FIDIC-based contracts to smaller subcontractor agreements in connection with both onshore and offshore renewable energy projects. In respect of corporate law, I mainly have experience with joint venture contracts, shareholder agreements, investment agreements, and development agreements in connection with renewable energy projects.

I am a qualified lawyer and have spent most of my career working in the legal profession. Here, I have worked at one of Denmark’s largest law firms and at Hulgaard Advokater, which is a smaller law firm. Additionally, I have worked as an in-house lawyer at one of Denmark’s largest subcontractors to the wind industry.

At Hulgaard Advokater, I work particularly within the energy and utilities sector, focusing on contract law, corporate law, and regulatory matters.

I have also completed a board education. As a young, female board member, I can offer SME boards a fresh perspective and a wealth of relevant business experience, particularly within the green transition.

I am also a member of the Danish Bar and Law Society.

Why did you become a lawyer?
That’s a really good question. I have dreamed of becoming a lawyer since I was a child. Why, I don’t really know – there are no lawyers in my family – but I have always been very academic (slightly nerdy) and have always had a strong sense of justice, so law has always appealed to me.

What does a typical workday look like for you?
My workdays vary greatly; some days I sit all day in front of my computer, reviewing and proposing amendments to contracts; other days are full-day of meetings either over Teams or at clients’ sites; while other days are a mix of both “desk work,” meetings and preparation for such meetings.

Most days typically start with getting an overview of the inbox and making the day’s to-dos over a cup of coffee.

Working with energy projects usually means tight deadlines and, in particular when negotiating international contracts, you need to be flexible with your working hours (due to time zones), so the workday is not always 8-16. That suits me well.

What skills are required for your job?
My job often involves negotiating a contract between two parties that often have opposing interests. Therefore, my job requires good empathy and listening skills to understand the needs of the other party. Often, compromises must be made in order to finalize the contract. Therefore, I believe it is an advantage to be able to think quickly, think outside the box, and be creative and innovative. It is essential to be able to express oneself clearly and precisely both in writing and orally in Danish and English.

What do you particularly like about your job?
I like the variation in that I get to immerse myself in complex legal matters – whether it’s interpretation of the law or understanding a contractual clause, while other times I sit in meetings where I am more “on the spot” and my immediate performance is crucial. It gives me the opportunity to bring different sides of myself into play.

What do you appreciate about working at Hulgaard Advokater?
I really appreciate my very sweet and considerate colleagues. It’s a bit like being part of a family, where there is an understanding of us being “whole” people, not just a workforce. Additionally, I greatly appreciate the high ceilings and great spaciousness.

When you’re not at work…
You can often find me on Danish or foreign hiking trails. Hiking has become my great passion, but I also enjoy being in the garden, cooking, or doing creative projects at home.
